When installing and repairing fireplaces, chimneys and stoves, the correct use of high-temperature heat-resistant compounds will be an important condition. They prevent smoke from escaping and are resistant to extreme temperatures. It is important to choose the right heat-resistant sealant, taking into account the maximum allowable temperature, the level of adhesion and curing.

Applications for heat-resistant sealants

The term "sealant" means a polymer composition that is applied to various surfaces and seams to isolate from moisture, air and protect against temperature extremes. High temperature sealants are used in installations where repairs are required on structures designed to withstand extreme temperatures. These are fireplaces, chimneys, stoves and various pipes.

The scope of the high-temperature composition will depend on its type. Different types are suitable for certain conditions, which must be considered before the very beginning of installation work.

Types of sealants

High-temperature sealants for furnaces are divided into one-component (most convenient) and two-component. The first is preferred more often, because they can be applied immediately after purchase, without the need for mixing. A two-component oven sealant consists of several elements, namely, a base substance and a catalyst. They should be mixed independently, immediately before work.

Depending on the base, heat-resistant sealants for stoves and fireplaces are:

  • Acrylic.
  • Bituminous.
  • Polyurethane.
  • Silicone.
  • Thiokol.

Insulators used at different temperatures are divided into heat-resistant (Titanium, Lakrisil, Kerezit) and heat-resistant (Soma Fix, Bostik, Knaufman). The first can withstand up to 350 degrees. Heat-resistant sealant withstands extreme temperatures up to 1500 degrees. The latter can interact with fire without compromising quality.

Well-known representatives of high-temperature insulators are wear-resistant and have a long service life. High-quality sealants have a slight shrinkage and do not provoke surface damage.

According to the polymer composition, high-temperature sealants are acidic and neutral. The former, according to experts, are not entirely suitable for installing stoves and fireplaces, since acetaldehyde adversely affects surfaces. It can lead to corrosion.

A neutral high temperature sealant will be the best choice for dealing with high temperatures. It is made of heat resistant silicone. The service life of such compounds exceeds 15 years, in addition, they can restore almost any (according to the material of manufacture) surfaces.

Features of heat-resistant sealants

Heat-resistant sealant is made on the basis of silicone. After some time after application and curing, silicone resembles rubber, and is a durable elastic compound. The sealant can stay in conditions where the temperature does not exceed 300-350 degrees.

Heat-resistant high-temperature composition can be used for the following purposes:

  • Treatment of cracks located from the side of the street.
  • Insulation of pipes made of different materials.
  • The work required to isolate the gaps of the furnaces.
  • Insulation materials to prevent exposure to moisture.

Such high-temperature products can be used in conditions of 200-350 degrees. They are unaffected by sudden temperature changes and weather changes.

Features of heat resistant sealants

A good heat-resistant oven sealant can withstand about 1500 degrees. It is made on the basis of silicate. Its color is black. The peculiarity will be that after curing it forms an inelastic solid mass. Such tools have poor adhesion to even and smooth materials, therefore they are not suitable for joining steel elements. At the same time, it is good for sealing threaded connections.

Sealant for furnaces from the heat-resistant category is used for:

  • Processing of joints between products made of metal, titanium, cast iron and brick.
  • Elimination and sealing of gaps in chimneys that discharge high temperature gas.
  • Filling gaps in contact with extreme temperatures.

How to carefully apply heat resistant sealant

For proper and safe work with fire-resistant high-temperature materials, you need a gun, as well as a spatula, gloves, masking tape. First of all, the pistol is loaded by cutting off the upper part of the tube, on which the cap is then put on.

The surface also requires preparation. The application area must be rinsed, getting rid of various contaminants and polyurethane foam. If the surface is too slick, this may affect the quality of the seal, so it is recommended to sand it for maximum adhesion.

Important! High temperature insulators must not be used on wet surfaces. Before using the product, everything must be dried.

It is applied under pressure for high-quality adhesion. After that, you need to wait a day for the joint and seam to dry completely. Apply the composition so as to completely close the gap. During operation, you can use special devices to align the seam. In addition to the gun, a spatula can be used for application as an alternative.
